Photographer Chris Sowe was born in Leeds and lives in London. He has an ongoing personal project documenting the effects of flood and coastal erosion on the landscape and those who live in it. The project shows an area called Spurn Head, a narrow isolated spit of land extending three and a half miles into the River Humber estuary near Hull, Yorkshire. "Since my first visit to the area, it's constantly changing mood and characteristics have drawn me back many times. I have produced a collection of images documenting the landscape and its changes along with portraits of those who live, visit and work in this isolated location". A walk along the shoreline reveals over a century of failed attempts to stop the onslaught of the sea. Victorian groynes now half submerged in fine sand stand alongside vast modern concrete structures collapsed onto the beach from low cliffs. Evidence that nature has no mercy when she returns to reclaim where man has tampered. Officially described as an area at immediate risk the government, local authorities and coastal management agent have declared their intention to do nothing. The official policy is one of managed retreat allowing surrounding land to take the impact of floodwater. Spurn Head will inevitably fall victim to the sea. The exhibition will continue at www.chrissowe.com |
