After graduating in languages in the early 80's, Pia worked for several years
in publishing, before switching tracks for a career in fine art. After
studying at Camberwell, Chelsea and KIAD, she ran a gallery in Curtain Road
for a brief spell, exhibiting some of her contemporaries, including Franko B
- the London-based performance artist. She also worked for several years
for a West End gallery, running the daily admin, making the tea, and
curating the work of some its artists in several major European museums.
Pia also taught part-time for many years in adult ed and on art foundation
courses.
Pia started her career as a photographer at art college, photographing
her own work, and the work of performance artists. Her first job was press
photographer for Company, the Vauxhall Tavern theatre group. She went on to
work for Freedom Radio and for Positive Nation Magazine as a press
photographer and some time art critic. She also worked freelance for many
other magazines.
Pia has work in private collections in London, Frankfurt and New
York.
"My photographs are about all the moments I missed, not just the
ones I managed to catch. It is an immensely frustrating way to work, but
the more you do it, the better you get. These images are from the start of
my career, and are about the intuitive response to situations, before the
technical side got in the way. Now I'm working towards a synthesis of the
two."
